Fat transfer for facial contouring and rejuvenation is a natural, nonsurgical remedy used to smooth moderate-to-severe facial folds, wrinkles and depressions, or to restore volume to your lips.
Unlike injectable fillers such as Juvederm, Botox, or Radiesse, fat transfer uses your body’s own naturally produced fat tissue by repurposing excess fat cells from areas of the body.
By using a small, specialized instrument to extract stubborn fat from areas like your back, thighs and abdomen, Dr. Montegut is able to prepare fat grafts from your tissue. Once grafted, he reinserts the cells back into your face in order to restore the volume lost during the natural aging process.
Because “fat grafting” uses your body’s natural autologous fat, the injections are thesoftest, most natural injections available. And unlike fillers and injectables, as long as the graft “takes”, the results are permanent.
Who’s A Good Candidate For Fat Transfer Facial Contouring?
While fat transfer for facial contouring has proven successful for patients upwards of seventy years old, the ideal candidate is somewhere between their early thirties and fifties, who’s skin is not too loose. And if you’re in good health, have realistic expectations and understand the limitations of the procedure, you may be a great candidate for a fat transfer.
Those undergoing the procedure should expect to:
- Restore volume to their lips
- Fill moderate lines, wrinkles, and depressions in the face
- Smooth nasolabial folds (wrinkles from corners of nose to mouth)
- Plump your jawline
While fat grafts will help restore more radiance to your face, they should not be viewed as a permanent solution to aging.
During the Procedure
Once you arrive at our board-certified AAAASF surgical suite, Dr. Montegut will carefully mark the areas of your face you wish to contour, and the areas where he will extract the fat cells. Depending on your preference, you may choose to use general anesthesia (sleeping throughout the procedure) or local anesthesia (awake, but treated areas will be numb). After our board-certified anesthesiologist administers the anesthetic, Dr. Montegut will “harvest” fat cells from your body using a surgical, liposuction-like instrument. Once the fat is extracted through tiny incisions in the skin, Dr. Montegut prepares the fat grafts.
Using a 1cc syringe, the fat grafts are then transferred to your face in varying layers to ensure a smoothly contoured appearance, and to increase the likelihood of the grafts survival by placing it close to other grafts from the same source.
Recovery and Results
Because fat grafting is a minimally invasive surgery, and is performed on an outpatient basis, you can go home shortly after the procedure. Though Dr. Montegut and his staff do closely monitor those who opt for a general anesthetic to ensure they are fully awake and aware before discharge.
While most patients report mild pain, expect to experience some swelling and minor bruising of the treated areas for the week following your procedure. Dr. Montegut will prescribe you a pain medication to ease the discomfort, if any.
We recommend that all of our facial rejuvenation fat transfer patients avoid highimpact activity for at least two weeks following your surgery.
